According to the Canadian Dental Association, 2% of the population worldwide suffer from severe tooth loss. If you are missing teeth or are at risk of losing them, your best solution may be to get dentures.

First, though, you will have to figure out which type is best for you. At Accurate Denture Clinic, we offer both traditional and implant supported dentures. Both options have different application processes and benefits. To learn everything you need to know about implant supported and traditional dentures, keep reading this guide.

What Are Traditional Dentures?

Traditional dentures are fitted to your gums and teeth and can be kept in place through adhesion or suction. They are removable, and you will need to take them out at night and after eating to clean them.

Complete dentures are available for those who need them to cover their entire top or bottom gum line. If you only need replacements for a section of your teeth, you can also get partial dentures.

What Are Implant Supported Dentures?

Implant supported dentures, or dentures over implants, are placed over titanium posts that sit below your gum line and act as tooth roots. The dentures attach to your jawline, making it easier to maintain your jaw bone health. Partial and complete implant supported dentures are available for this option as well.

There are two types of implant supported dentures: removable and fixed. Just like the name states, the removable dentures can be attached and removed from the implants. Fixed dentures act like a permanent set of teeth by using some attachments, preventing them from coming out.

Implant Supported vs Traditional Dentures

Now that you know what your options are, you likely want to know the benefits of each. One characteristic these two types of dentures share is their natural appearance. You should feel confident with your new smile no matter which one you choose.

The area that might influence your decision the most is cost. Generally speaking, traditional dentures cost less than implant supported ones.

The process of acquiring them is shorter, too, because you typically don't need to undergo surgery. However, if you need tooth extractions, in most cases, you may be able to receive immediate dentures by getting the impressions before the extractions.

As for implant dentures, you can clean them the same way you do your natural teeth—brushing and flossing regularly. Because they are attached to your jaw bone, they are more stable than traditional dentures.

Healthwise, not only are they beneficial for your jaw, but they prevent gum tissue loss too.

The lifespan of both these dentures extends when you maintain good dental hygiene and a healthy lifestyle. Going to the denturist to get them relined every two to three years will ensure they still fit your mouth correctly.
